The Growth of Montgomery Independent School District

Montgomery ISD started out as a smaller school district, but with the increase in population and the future growth as well, the district is busting at the seams. Montgomery High School has a 2,600 student capacity, for the 2015-16 school year there were 2,518 students enrolled. “We expect to go over maximum capacity in August of next year.” Superintendent Beau Rees said. In order for the district to alleviate the overcrowding they will need to build new additional schools. In May 2015 a $256.75 million bond referendum was approved. In May 2016, MISD will break ground on a new high school that is slated to open to students in August 2018. Along with the new high school, MISD broke ground last year on a new elementary and middle school located on Keenan Cut Off Road. This will help alleviate the over-crowding and growth at Lone Star Elementary and Montgomery Junior High. Both the new elementary and middle school are scheduled to open in August 2017.

In addition to the new schools being built, MISD will begin renovation projects at some of the current schools. Montgomery High School, which is close to 20 years old, will receive improvements to the band hall, choir rooms, athletic facilities, parking and also add a black-box theater. Montgomery Junior High School will also receive renovations to classrooms and athletic facilities. One of the bigger changes will take place at Montgomery Intermediate School and Montgomery Middle School, which are currently the home to the 5th and 6th graders of the district. Both of these schools will be renovated and converted to K-5 elementary schools to begin the 2017-18 school year. Montgomery ISD is making an effort to move to a new grade-level system. This would mean prekindergarten through 5th grade will be housed at the elementary schools, 6th through 8th grade at the middle schools and 9th-12th grade at the high schools. The district administration feels it is better for the students to have fewer transitions during their grade school years.

This is exciting news for residents and future residents of Montgomery Independent School District. It will allow the school district to grow to higher levels. It will also better accommodate its current students and give them a higher level of excellence than they already are receiving.
